Introduction to Exim

To extract energy from flowing water is, like from wind and sun, environmentally friendly. They are the only real existing renewable and sustainable energy sources that do not emit any harmful emissions. They generate energy of great importance to society at all levels, namely electricity.

Many suggest that nuclear power is also emission-free. This is not true, as there indirectly becomes large amounts of hazardous waste generated, for which still today have no satisfactory way to take care of. Major emissions after accidents at nuclear plants has also meant that more and more voices are raised for a global reduction of nuclear power.

This means that energy from currents (water, wind, sun) has great potential as future energy forces.


Extraction of energy from flowing water is not something new. Waterwheels and similar rotors have been used since time immemorial. Major development in the construction of more efficient turbines took place during the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s. Inventors and scientists like Lester Pelton (1879/1887), James B. Francis (1848) and Viktor Kaplan (1913), developed turbines of great importance for the extraction of energy from falling water.


Only in recent years has the development of turbines for tidal- and water-streams taken off. The EXIM™ turbine has been developed based on the Savonius turbine, developed by and patented by Finnish scientist Sigurd Savonius 1924, originally and still used as a wind turbine (refer to “Energy from wind – EXIM™ ). In 1997, the inventor and MSc Göran Lagström, patented a Savonius turbine as a water turbine.

Exim Strömturbiner AB has then for about 6 years developed a product (power turbine) for large-scale production of renewable, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy from the flowing tide and small scale production from other water streams. The environmental benefits are numerous when using these turbines. The require minimal infrastructure, requiring no dams, has low rotation speeds, and damage to fish and other aquatic animals is minimal.

Corporate Philosophy

Exim Strömturbiner AB obviously wants through its development of a simple small-scale hydro turbine, aid in reaching by UN and other agencies environmental targets, without thereby sacrificing a profitable business, but also to improve individual living conditions in places where it is today, and for foreseeable future, no access to electricity.


While in industrialised countries require large-scale power plants to meet the exponential growth in energy demand and to replace such as nuclear plants, the situation in developing is different. Large-scale solutions are of course necessary even there, especially in urban areas, but large areas currently lack infrastructure for electricity distribution. In large areas throughout Asia, Africa and Latin/South America, along many rich water flows, millions of people live without access to electricity. It is a tragedy that this makes it difficult for farmers to irrigate their fields enough, despite ample access to water. An electric pump would change his and many others´ living conditions entirely. Development of stoves, refrigerators, freezers and other kitchen equipment for operation with low DC power, creates an opportunity for increased quality of life and a healthier environment.

Access to electricity also means that computers and mobile phones where connected to Internet, can be used and recharged. Of the UN and other organisations targets for education, can get through this much needed help. What access to lighting, maybe simple, but still lighting, could mean for opportunities to study and work, where today, at best, have access to kerosene lamps, we in the developed world can hardly understand. Ability to watch television can break isolation and help increase general knowledge. For cooking often wood or coal-burning stoves are used, which greatly contributes to the ill health of mainly women and children. Access to electricity thus contribute to better living conditions and eliminates the laborious task of collecting wood and transport cool, often far from home. Today it is common to use polluting diesel/petrol powered generators. In addition to improving the environment with electrical generators, the need for costly and labour intensive transport and purchase are reduced.

The power station generate renewable, domestic-produced, zero-emission energy. They are built around a simple, cost-effective turbine and other proven technology which makes them ideal for local manufacturing and assembly thus providing local jobs.

Business idea and vision

Exim Strömturbiner AB develops small-scale technology and methods for extracting renewable, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy from flowing water.

The company develop these turbines primarily for charging batteries.


Along the rivers and smaller streams without access to electricity, mainly in developing countries, millions of people live. The turbines allows them access to clean energy instead of the one they now often have to operate – environment unfriendly and hazardous coal-burning stoves and fireplaces, diesel and petrol generators etc.

Our vision is to be able to give these millions of people a cleaner environment and a healthier, better lives and opportunities to education, entrepreneurship, and more.

Marketing and sales strategy

This plan applies primarily to small-scale power turbines. Despite considerable interest in tidal turbines , the forecasts just now only that they may be included in the business plan until after 2015.


To extract energy from flowing water is nothing new. However, what unique to Exim´s technology is that no dams or similar constructions need to be built. The turbines get energy directly from the flowing water.

Exim´s technology includes the ability to elect the turbines sizes, components etc adapted to local conditions and thus achieve optimal results.

Small-scale stream power is also ideal for applications where a power source to recharge the batteries when such is needed for immediate consumption, which is the case when the electricity grid is missing.

In developed countries power turbines can be an interesting alternative to diesel or petrol generators at agriculture, small industries, cottage owners, etc, where one has access to running water of sufficient depth and velocity, but the larget markets are undoubtedly in developing countries in Asia,/Africa/Latin America, where the need for locally produced energy is insatiable. Manufacturing for prototypes is assumed to take place in Sweden. As manufacturing and assembly is relatively easy, however, local production will be the best option.

It is important to point out that in order to install a power turbine from Exim is not required to build a dam or similar constructions.
When the first tidal plant is planned (expected to take place no earlier than 2015/2016), it will be considered if the manufacture of component parts will also take place in Sweden. However, it is likely that at least the floating platform will be made closer to the actual plant location.

Sales strategy
In Sweden Exim Strömturbiner AB will, at least before a market position is established, be responsible for the sales of the turbines. Depending on the sales trend it will be then decided if a own sales force will be organised or if an agent network will engaged.

In the international market, Exin will entirely concentrate on de emerging economies with the transfer of know-how, thus helping the countries to create job opportunities by the establishment of local production and training as the beginning of a qualified industrial development.
